Law Students

Law studentsLaw schools teach students to “think like lawyers,” but they don’t teach students to think like business people.  Today the challenges facing law students are more complex than ever before. The world is changing fast – faster than at any time in the past. And the legal profession, one steeped in tradition and generally averse to change, is having to change right along with it. No longer can placement at the top of your class be a guarantee of the ideal position upon graduation. And gone are the days when merely practicing law well guaranteed a steady stream of clients.

Competition, outsourcing, and the effects of the global economy are forcing more and more new lawyers to “hang out their own shingle.” Unfortunately, while law schools teach their students to “think like lawyers,” they don’t teach them to think like entrepreneurs. They don’t teach the skills an attorney needs to run a law practice like a business. And like it or not, if you are running a law practice, you are running a business. The goal is not to run it into the ground or let it run you.
